In reality, every brand plan, launch plan and medical plan is shaped by events with unknown outcomes. Competitor trial results. Payer decisions. Guideline updates. Regulatory shifts. The organisations that succeed are not those that predict the future correctly. They are those that plan for multiple futures deliberately.
This toolkit gives pharma marketing and medical affairs professionals a practical framework for doing exactly that.
The Risk & Uncertainty Toolkit distils the core frameworks from CELforPharma's course Managing Uncertainty & Risk in Pharma Marketing & Medical Planning, taught by Dr Neal Hansen and Mitchell Cooke of Align Strategy. It covers three tools to be leveraged via a four-step process, presented as a concise visual reference you can use in your own planning cycles.

What the toolkit covers:
The 4-Step Uncertainty Management Process is a structured approach to embedding risk and uncertainty planning into pharma marketing and medical planning cycles.
Map the full range of uncertainties via situational analysis, uncovering near-term (1-3 years), mid-term (3-5 years), and long-term (5+ years), as well as internal, market, and competitive uncertainties. Define the base-case: the most probable future outcome of the uncertainties given everything currently known.
Identify alternative (negative) outcomes to the base-case - these are your risks. Assess each potential risk by likelihood of occurrence and business impact. Use a priority matrix to focus resources on the risks that are high-impact (even if likelihood of occurring is low). Then assess your ability to address each risk, whether it can be managed proactively within strategy or only responded to reactively.
Where multiple uncertainties interact, which is common in mid- to long-term planning, use scenario planning to consolidate outcomes into thematic future worlds. Each scenario should reflect distinctly different strategic implications, so that whichever future plays out, the organisation is ready to pivot.
Pressure-test the base-case strategy, review market-shaping activities, build contingency plans for low-probability but high-impact scenarios, and put in place a continuous, targeted monitoring plan.
This toolkit is designed for pharma professionals who own or contribute to planning at any level:
It is relevant across all lifecycle stages, from early development through to loss of exclusivity planning.
"Communicating uncertainty alone is useless. Communicating uncertainty must include how you plan to manage those uncertainties. It is only through the communication of these plans that you will build credibility and confidence in your stakeholders."
