An Overview Course

Course Details

For many pharma companies, the most significant source of new products lies in Business Development (BD).

Often, the BD function falls short due to a lack of strategic alignment and a failure to coordinate efforts across the organisation.

To optimise successful transactions and partnerships, companies need a structured BD&L process and all contributors need to understand the whole process.

This course offers a unique opportunity to speed up your learning curve by giving you a comprehensive overview of the licensing process in the context of business development in the pharma-biotech world.

You will not only be able to ask your specific questions to a true expert, but you will also have the unique opportunity to share experiences, have in-depth discussions and network with a group of international peers.

I enjoyed this dynamic and comprehensive introduction to BD&L for Pharma and Biotech. I strongly recommend this course for anyone who is looking for an overview of the in- and out-licensing process.

Boehringer Ingelheim

Hervé Poulet, Strategic Partnerships Senior Director - France - November 2023

  1. The role of the BD&L function and partnering models for corporate growth.

  2. Key success factors and tips for the planning and execution of the out-licensing process.

  3. Key success factors and tips for the planning and execution of the in-licensing process.

  4. What you need to know about patents and intellectual property.

  5. Overview of forecasting and valuation tools, methods and approaches.

  6. Introduction to term sheets, negotiation, closing the deal and managing the alliance.

This course gave a complete overview of all BD aspects. Carlos' own experience, examples and practical tips really added to this learning experience and the tools & processes shared (e.g. pitch deck, follow up, etc.) were also valuable. Thank you very much for two engaging and insightful days!

  • Prior to that, Carlos built a 10+ years career in senior Business Development roles at Penwest Pharmaceuticals, Lantic Therapeutics Forest Labs, and Genencor (now Danisco).

The Business Development & Licensing Course For Pharma & Biotech is an ideal introductory course for two categories of executives:

  • Junior to mid-level managers contributing to the BD&L process in the headquarters of midsize and big pharma companies (e.g. technology assessment, business intelligence…) who need a better understanding of the complete licensing process in the context of business development.

Managers in local marketing organisations with responsibility for business development & licensing in national markets will also benefit but they should be aware that the course content is geared towards international licensing BD responsibilities.

Executives working in generics companies should be aware that the content of this course concentrates on licensing deals involving branded pharmaceuticals.

Online Public courses -  live webinar

Webinars where the participants can communicate among themselves or ask questions to the speaker(s) (be it verbally, via a chat function or similar), are considered as ‘online interactive webinars’ by the Belgian VAT administration.
According to Article 53 of the European Union VAT Directive 2006/112, these online interactive webinars take place where the organisation of the seminar takes place, which in this case is Belgium.
So, if you register for one of our live online courses (organised from our offices in Belgium), we are obliged to charge 21% Belgian VAT.
However, you can recover this Belgian VAT through the refund procedure. Note that this procedure differs depending on the country where you are located. It is best to contact your local VAT administration for this.

Self-Study Programme:

A self-study programme is a service provided electronically. It is the period of self-study that is the most important in our self-study Basics of Health Economics and not the kickoff and closing webinars. As a result, this self-study program follows a different VAT application and the place of the service is where the customer is established. Therefore, we follow the VAT rules applicable to the country of your invoicing address.

Our face-to-face courses in Brussels take place in four-star business hotels close to the airport. As part of our strong relationship with these hotels, CELforPharma has secured a discount on the daily room rate for our delegates who book their accommodation via us.

Upon your registration, we will assist you to make your hotel booking. For any assistance in this matter please do not hesitate to email Lisa Causero, Programme Coordinator, or contact her by phone at +32 484 70 91 97.

We do not record our live online public courses as we want to offer a safe environment for all attendees to share their experiences and freely ask questions.

This way, by participating in our courses, you do not only learn from our expert faculty but also from your international peers in the room.

No, we don't sell the course materials as a stand-alone.
Without the expert's explanation, the exercises and the discussions with other course participants, there is very little value in the slides.

Email Inge Cornelis, partner with CELforPharma, to help you choose the course that is best suited.
