Mastering collaboration in value-based healthcare: 5 principles for success

In value-based healthcare, successful collaboration among stakeholders is not just beneficial—it's essential. It's a complex and multi-stakeholder process that requires a nuanced understanding of each party’s motivations, a genuine willingness to listen, and a commitment to authenticity and sincerity. In this article, CELforPharma faculty members Dr. Silvia Rohr and Mark Tolboom from the Value-based Healthcare for Pharma: Why – When – How? course (both working at Vintura and having a lot of experience in value-based healthcare projects) delve into five key principles that underpin successful collaboration in the pursuit of value-based healthcare (VBHC).

Mastering Collaboration in Value-Based Healthcare: 5 Principles for Success

  1. Think Outside-In: To truly collaborate effectively, it's imperative to adopt an "outside-in" mindset. This means going beyond your own perspective and understanding what drives other stakeholders. By gaining insights into their priorities, challenges, and aspirations, you can tailor your approach in a way that resonates both for them and you. This approach ensures that your interests are addressed in a manner that aligns with the broader goals of the collaboration.

  2. Listen to Understand: Effective communication is at the heart of successful collaboration. Listening to understand, rather than simply to respond, is crucial. By actively listening to stakeholders, you gain valuable insights that inform your interactions and enable you to craft a compelling narrative that speaks to their interests and concerns. Creating an audience that is genuinely receptive to your message is the first step towards meaningful collaboration in VBHC.

  3. Be Authentic and Sincere: Authenticity breeds trust, and trust is the foundation of successful collaboration in VBHC. Transparency about your intentions and offerings is key. It's essential to articulate why you are addressing a particular topic and what value you bring to the table. However, authenticity doesn't end with words - it must be reflected in your actions. Walking the talk demonstrates sincerity and builds credibility, fostering stronger relationships with stakeholders.

  4. Find Common Ground: Collaboration thrives when there is a shared purpose and narrative. Through multi-stakeholder dialogues, stakeholders can identify areas of common interest and forge connections based on mutual goals. These dialogues enable stakeholders to align their efforts towards shared objectives. By finding common ground, VBHC initiatives become more cohesive and impactful.

  5. Co-create Solutions: True collaboration extends beyond dialogue—it involves action. Partnering with stakeholders to co-create initiatives and solutions ensures that interventions are relevant, sustainable, and impactful. By leveraging the diverse expertise and perspectives of all stakeholders, innovative solutions can be developed that address complex challenges in value-based healthcare. Co-creation fosters ownership and acceptance, leading to lasting positive change.

By embracing these principles, pharma can navigate the complexities of collaboration and drive meaningful progress towards improved healthcare outcomes.
